Company legal forms by country

What an SL, a SARL, a Ltd, a GmbH or an LLC is, by country, and how each appears in the Prometiam company object.

A company’s legal form tells you who is liable for its debts, how it is run and how much capital stands behind it. Every country names its forms differently: an SL in Spain, a SARL in France, a Ltd in the UK, a GmbH in Switzerland, an LLC in the US. This hub links one guide per country, each listing every legal form the Prometiam dictionary knows, and six side-by-side comparisons.

Private and public limited companies by country

The two forms most businesses meet, side by side. The private form is the small-business vehicle; the public (joint-stock) form is the one that can raise money from the public.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a private and a public limited company?
Both limit the owners’ liability to what they invested. A private limited company (SL, SARL, Ltd, GmbH, ApS, AB...) may not offer its shares to the public and usually needs little capital; a public limited company (SA, PLC, AG, S.A., A/S...) can raise money from the public and may be listed, and usually needs more capital and more formal governance.
What does legal_form_family mean?
It is the cross-country family of a legal form, such as private_limited_company or public_limited_company, so a Spanish SL, a French SARL and a British Ltd can be compared in one filter.
Which forms can I look up with the API?
Every company the API serves carries its legal form: Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Poland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Latvia, Cyprus, Romania, Lithuania, Canada, Australia, Japan, Israel, Singapore, Colombia, Taiwan, Brazil and the United States.
