European corporate insolvency tracker

New corporate insolvency proceedings opened each month in Europe, by country, counted from the official gazettes and registers. Updated 10 October 2026 with data to September 2026. Corporate debtors only; personal insolvency is never counted. Only months where a country's collection was complete are shown; every other month is marked "not covered".

What is counted

One new proceeding is counted once, in the calendar month its opening was published or decided, depending on the country's source. The rule differs by country because each gazette and register publishes differently, and it is stated below. Corporate debtors only (legal entities), never sole traders or individuals. These are notices as published by the official gazettes and registers, not a statistic of any statistics office, and they can differ from official statistics.

  • France: Collective-proceedings judgments published in the BODACC, opening judgments only (liquidation, redressement judiciaire, sauvegarde), one per company and type per month, counted in the month of publication. Complete from January 2025; earlier months are not covered.
  • Germany: Insolvency cases first published in the national insolvency portal, counted once in the month of the first notice. The portal does not type its notices, so this counts new cases published, not openings by court; files from earlier years are excluded. Collection began in January 2025 and the first six months are not published, because notices of proceedings opened before collection would be counted as new.
  • United Kingdom: Creditors' voluntary liquidations, winding-up orders (compulsory liquidation) and administrations, from the Gazette, one per company and type, counted in the month of the first notice. Members' voluntary (solvent) liquidations are not counted. The Gazette series starts in April 2025; April is not published.
  • Denmark: Bankruptcy (konkurs) proceedings, one per proceeding, in the month of the bankruptcy decree. The history is complete. Contains CVR data (Erhvervsstyrelsen), CC BY 4.0.
  • Sweden: Bankruptcy (konkurs), company reorganisation (företagsrekonstruktion) and composition negotiations (ackordsförhandling), one per company and type per month. Proceedings that had already ended when collection began are missing, so earlier months are understated; 2025 and before are not published.
  • Finland: Bankruptcies and corporate restructurings registered in the Trade Register, one per company and type per month. The register lists companies currently in a proceeding, so a month is published only in the five months after it closes and is not revised afterwards; the series begins when the tracker was first published.
  • Netherlands: Bankruptcies (faillissement) and suspensions of payment (surseance van betaling) of legal entities, one per case, in the month of the court's decision; a suspension converted into a bankruptcy counts as both. The register drops a case six months after it ends, so a month is published only in the five months after it closes and is not revised afterwards; the series begins when the tracker was first published.

Not covered

The insolvency API serves twelve markets (FR, DE, GB, AT, CH, NO, FI, US, NL, DK, HR, SE). The tracker publishes a country only where a complete monthly series can be defended; the others are not covered.

  • Austria: Not covered. The Austrian source is a rolling list of current edicts, not dated by opening, and has gaps in its collection; new proceedings per month cannot be derived.
  • Switzerland: Not covered. The official gazette (SHAB) mixes the stages of a bankruptcy (provisional notice, call to creditors, closure) and each notice is not typed in our data, so openings cannot be separated; collection also began in 2026.
  • Norway: Not covered. The register shows companies currently in bankruptcy; proceedings that have ended are no longer listed, so monthly counts are understated and cannot be confirmed as complete.
  • Croatia: Not covered. Court decisions are held only for companies still on the commercial register, so earlier months are understated by an unknown amount.
  • United States: Not covered. Federal bankruptcy filings of businesses are collected only where the public court-records project (CourtListener/RECAP) holds the docket, a small fraction of filings, and collection stopped in March 2026.

The notices behind these counts are available from the API: GET /insolvency/search returns each notice with its company, date and link, and POST /insolvency/check screens a list of counterparties. Insolvency notices are corporate only, twelve markets.
