What a LEI is

A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character code that uniquely identifies a legal entity in financial transactions worldwide. The last two characters are an ISO 7064 MOD 97-10 checksum, so a mistyped LEI can be caught before any lookup. LEIs are issued by accredited Local Operating Units and published by GLEIF, the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation, as open data.

What the register tells you

Legal name, registered and headquarters address, jurisdiction, legal form, the local registry identifier the entity is registered under, registration status (issued, lapsed, retired), and next renewal date. A lapsed LEI is a meaningful signal in itself — it means the entity stopped renewing.

Ownership relationships

GLEIF also publishes Level-2 data: direct and ultimate parent relationships between LEIs. That is genuine cross-border ownership data, reported by the entities themselves, and it is one of the few open sources of group structure. The Prometiam API exposes those relationships through its LEI endpoints alongside registry data for Spain, France, the UK, Ireland, Poland and Norway.
