German company data API: look up German companies that hold an LEI

A customer types a German company name or an LEI; your form fills in the legal name, legal form, status and registered address, with the register court and number. One key and one response shape, the same as every other country the API covers. This is a company set defined by the LEI, not the German commercial register.

Germany is served as LEI-registered entities only, from the golden copy of the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), read every day. These are German companies that hold an LEI, not every German company, and the data is not an extract of the Handelsregister: there is no open route to the commercial register, whose portal caps automated retrieval and publishes no bulk or API data. Commercial legal persons and partnerships only: GmbH, UG (haftungsbeschränkt), AG, KGaA, SE, OHG, KG (including GmbH & Co. KG), eG and PartG. Sole traders (e.K.) and other natural persons, GbR, associations (e.V.), foundations, public-law bodies, funds and branches are never served.

What the German record gives your product

  • Exact match on the LEI: lei=W38RGI023J3WT1HWRP32 with country=DE. The 20-character LEI has an ISO 17442 check.
  • Search by name: a normalised, partial match ranked by a match score.
  • The fields a form needs: legal name, legal form, status (active, deregistered or merged), registered address with postal code, city and Land, and the founding date where GLEIF has it.
  • The register entry in registry_details: register_court (for example Amtsgericht München), register_type (HRB, HRA, GnR), register_number (for example 6684) and lei_status, the LEI's own renewal status (issued, lapsed, retired), which is separate from the company status.
  • Register-change events (name, status, legal form, registered address; none before the first load in October 2026) and monitoring.

What Germany does not carry

No officers, shareholders or beneficial owners, no share capital, no activity code, no VAT number (a vat search is refused), no registry-compliance signal and no financial statements. German corporate insolvency notices are a separate dataset, already served for Germany as one of the twelve insolvency markets; the notices are not linked to these company records.

Frequently asked questions

Does Prometiam have the German commercial register (Handelsregister)?
No. Germany is served as LEI-registered entities only, from the GLEIF golden copy: German companies that hold an LEI, not every German company, and not an extract of the Handelsregister. There is no open route to the commercial register: its portal caps automated retrieval and publishes no bulk or API data.
How do I look up a German company by LEI from an API?
Call GET /companies/search?country=DE&lei=W38RGI023J3WT1HWRP32. The LEI has 20 characters and an ISO 17442 check. To search by name use name= with country=DE.
Which German entities are covered?
Commercial legal persons and partnerships that hold an LEI: GmbH, UG (haftungsbeschränkt), AG, KGaA, SE, OHG, KG (including GmbH & Co. KG), eG and PartG. Sole traders (e.K.) and other natural persons, GbR, associations (e.V.), foundations, public-law bodies, funds and branches are never served.
What is the difference between status and lei_status?
status is the company: active, deregistered or merged. lei_status in registry_details is the state of the LEI itself, for example issued or lapsed. A company can be active while its LEI has lapsed because nobody renewed it.
Can I find the register court and HRB number?
Yes, where GLEIF holds it: registry_details carries register_court (for example Amtsgericht München), register_type (HRB, HRA or GnR) and register_number (for example 6684).
Are German insolvency notices linked to these companies?
No. Germany is one of the twelve insolvency markets and its notices (insolvenzbekanntmachungen.de, corporate only) are served through GET /insolvency/search?country=DE, but they are not linked to the company records. Search them by name.
Can I look up a German company by VAT number?
No. The set carries no VAT number, so a vat search for Germany is refused. To check a number against VIES, use GET /vat/ followed by the number.
