Estonia company data API: look up and validate a registry code

A customer types an Estonian registry code, a KMKR VAT number or the first letters of a name; your form fills in the legal name, legal form, status and registered address from the Estonian e-Business Register. One key and one response shape, the same as every other country the API covers.

Company records from the Estonian e-Business Register (RIK): legal name, legal form, status (including liquidation and bankruptcy), registered address, activity code (EMTAK 2008 or 2025, per company) and dates; with register-change events and monitoring, but no officers, no registry-compliance signal and no insolvency notices. Sole traders (FIE, füüsilisest isikust ettevõtja) are never served, and the VAT number (KMKR) is searchable with vat=.

What the Estonian record gives your product

  • Exact match on the registry code: company_number=10060701 with country=EE. Spaces and hyphens are optional, and the check digit is enforced server-side: a code that fails it is a 400.
  • The VAT number: vat=EE100354546 reaches a company through its KMKR number, where the register publishes one.
  • Autocomplete by name: a normalised, partial match ranked by a match score, one call per keystroke.
  • The fields a form needs: legal name, legal form, status (registered, in liquidation or in bankruptcy), registered address with the county, the main activity as an EMTAK code (2008 or 2025 per company) and the date of first entry.

What Estonia does not carry

No officers or shareholders, no registry-compliance signal and no insolvency notices (liquidation and bankruptcy show in the status). Register-change events and monitoring are available. Sole traders (FIE) are never served.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up an Estonian company by registry code from an API?
Call GET /companies/search?company_number=10060701&country=EE. Spaces and hyphens are optional and the check digit is enforced server-side; a code that fails it is a 400 validation error rather than an empty list.
Can I look up an Estonian company by VAT number?
Yes: vat=EE100354546 with country=EE reaches a company through its KMKR number, where the register publishes one. The KMKR is a separate number from the registry code.
Which activity codes do Estonian companies carry?
EMTAK, in the 2008 version (NACE Rev. 2) or the 2025 version (NACE Rev. 2.1), per company. activity_code_scheme says which one.
Does the Estonian record include officers, company events or insolvency notices?
Company events yes; officers and insolvency notices no. Estonia is company-level: legal name, legal form, status, registered address, activity code and dates. There are no officers and no registry-compliance signal, and no insolvency notices: liquidation and bankruptcy show in the company's status. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address, dated when the change first appears in the register data, none before 2026-09-30) and monitoring are available.
Does it cover Estonian sole traders?
No. Sole traders (FIE) are never served, so a lookup of one returns nothing even though the business exists.
Can I call the API from the browser?
You can, but a key in the browser is public. Proxy the search through your server, as in the sample above. Rate limits are per key.
Is there a way to try it before signing up?
Yes: the free registry code lookup runs the same call with a shared key.
