US company data API: state registers, SEC EDGAR and GLEIF

Look up a US company by name, state registration number, SEC CIK or LEI and get the same response shape as every European country the API covers. The United States has no national company register, so the API joins the business registers of New York, Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania with the SEC's EDGAR filers and GLEIF's LEI holders.

What is covered: company records from the business registers of New York, Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, plus SEC filers (EDGAR) and LEI holders (GLEIF) from every state, Delaware included. One record per state registration, domestic or foreign. New York and Pennsylvania publish active entities only. Updated weekly. No officers and no registry-compliance signal, with register-change events (dated by the weekly read) and monitoring; no VAT number (a vat search is refused); US insolvency notices are on /insolvency/search and are not linked to the company records; sole proprietorships are never served. Not every US company is covered: outside those states only SEC filers and LEI holders appear.

Number formats

  • State registration: the state code, a dash and the register number: NY-4424185, CO-20091096973, DE-10684990 (a Delaware LEI holder).
  • SEC filer known only to the SEC: CIK- and ten digits, for example CIK-0000002186 (BK Technologies Corp). A CIK or an LEI also finds the state registration that carries it: CIK-0000320193 returns Apple Inc., California registration CA-806592.
  • LEI holder with no state number: LEI- and the 20-character LEI.
  • The CIK, the EIN (SEC filers) and the LEI are also returned in the identifiers of a record.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up a US company from an API?
Call GET /companies/search?country=US&name=... for a name, or GET /companies/search?country=US&company_number=NY-4424185 for an exact match on a state registration number. A CIK- or LEI- number works the same way. The record id the search returns goes to GET /companies/{id} for the detail.
Does the API cover every US company?
No. The United States has no national company register. The API serves the business registers of New York, Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, plus SEC filers (EDGAR) and LEI holders (GLEIF) from every state. A company that is registered only in another state and has neither an SEC filing nor an LEI is not in it.
Is Delaware covered?
Only through the SEC and GLEIF. Delaware does not publish its register as open data, so a Delaware company appears when it files with the SEC or holds an LEI, or when it is registered as a foreign company in New York, Colorado, Connecticut or Pennsylvania.
What is one record per state registration?
A company formed in Delaware and registered in New York is a New York record marked foreign, with Delaware as its state of formation; the same company registered in Pennsylvania too is a second, separate record, as in the registers themselves. A company registered in the state where it was formed is domestic.
Why is a dissolved New York company missing?
New York and Pennsylvania publish active entities only, so a company that has been dissolved there is not served. Colorado and Connecticut publish every status, so dissolved, withdrawn and revoked entities are served for those states.
Can I get officers, a VAT number or monitoring for a US company?
No. The US record carries no officers and no registry-compliance signal, with register-change events (dated by the weekly read) and monitoring, and no VAT number: a vat search for the United States is refused. SEC filers carry their EIN as an identifier. US corporate insolvency notices are on /insolvency/search?country=US and are not linked to the company records. Sole proprietorships are never served.
Are there financial statements for US companies?
For SEC filers, yes: annual reports (10-K, 20-F and 40-F) from EDGAR XBRL, consolidated, US GAAP or IFRS, from fiscal year 2023, in the filing currency (mostly USD) with euro at the ECB annual average. They are on the Scale plan and above; Starter, Professional and free trial keys have 10 calls a month.
Can I try it before signing up?
Yes: the free US company lookup runs the same call with a shared key.
