US business verification API: state registers, SEC filers and LEI holders

There is no national company register in the United States. This API reads five state business registers plus every SEC filer and LEI holder, in one JSON shape, with monitoring. Here is exactly what that covers and what it does not.

Scope first

Business registration in the US is held by each state. This API serves the registers of New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Florida, plus SEC filers (from EDGAR) and LEI holders (from GLEIF) from every state, Delaware included. That is not every US company: a small Delaware or Texas company with no SEC filing and no LEI is not here.

  • One record per state registration, domestic or foreign; registry_details.jurisdiction is the state of formation.
  • No officers, no registered agent, no EIN or FEI (SEC filers carry their EIN), and no registry-compliance signal.
  • No VAT number: a vat search is refused.
  • US insolvency notices are not linked to the company records.
  • Sole proprietorships, estates and personal trusts are never served.

The call and the number formats

A company number carries its source: NY-4424185 (New York), FL-L26000000001 (Florida, the Division of Corporations document number), CIK-0000320193 (an SEC filer) and LEI-<lei> (a GLEIF record). A CIK- or LEI- search also finds the state registration that carries it. Name search takes name=.

# by state number
curl 'https://api.prometiam.com/functions/v1/risk-api/companies/search?country=US&company_number=NY-4424185' \
  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rk_live_...'

# by SEC CIK (Apple Inc.)

  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rk_live_...'

# by name

  -H 'Authorization: Bearer rk_live_...'

Results are in data. The record has company_name, company_number, status (the standard value) and local_status (the register's own word), legal_form, founding_date where the register gives one, the address and registry_details.

Good standing and status

status is one standard vocabulary across all countries, so your code does not branch by state. Colorado entities the register marks Delinquent or Noncompliant (a late periodic report) are served as active with local_status delinquent. New York and Pennsylvania publish active entities only. Florida serves active and inactive entities, an inactive one carrying its reason (dissolved, withdrawn, revoked or merged). The SEC gives no legal status, so an SEC-only record is unknown.

Monitoring and filed statements

POST /monitor with country US sends a webhook on a register-change event (name, status, legal form, registered address) and on a sanctions match (screening is beta). The registers are read weekly, so a change is dated by the weekly read that first sees it; there are no US events before 9 October 2026, and none for Florida before its first load in October 2026.

For SEC filers, GET /companies/{id}/financials returns the annual report (10-K, 20-F and 40-F) from EDGAR XBRL: consolidated, US GAAP or IFRS, fiscal years from 2023, in the filing currency with a euro value. It is on the Scale plan; lower plans have 10 calls a month. Other US companies answer sec_filers_only. See the SEC EDGAR company search API.

How it differs from a state-by-state integration

A Secretary of State portal answers one person at a screen. A verification flow needs the same field names for New York and Colorado, name search with candidates, a batch of up to 100 lookups in POST /companies/lookup, and the foreign registers your next customer will come from. This API gives that in one schema across every live country, and it says plainly where a state is not covered. If you need live per-state scraping of all fifty states, this is not that product.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one API for every US state?
No national register exists. This API serves five state registers (New York, Colorado, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida) plus SEC filers and LEI holders from every state. A company in another state is found only if it files with the SEC or holds an LEI.
Can I look up a company by CIK or LEI?
Yes. Use company_number=CIK-<10 digits> or LEI-<lei>; the search also returns the state registration that carries it.
Does it return officers or the registered agent?
No. US records carry no officers, registered agent or EIN (SEC filers carry theirs), and there is no registry-compliance signal.
How fresh is the data?
Weekly. Florida's daily files are applied at the weekly read, and addresses refresh with the quarterly file.
Can I get financial statements for a US company?
For SEC filers, yes: 10-K, 20-F and 40-F, on the Scale plan. For other US companies the answer is sec_filers_only.
