Search SEC filers by name or CIK from code, get the company record with its identifiers, and read the annual statements from their 10-K, 20-F or 40-F filings, with a worked Apple example.
EDGAR is the SEC's filing system, and an "EDGAR company search" or "SEC company search" is a search by name or CIK (Central Index Key) of the companies that file with it. The Prometiam API puts that search behind GET /companies/search?country=US, in the same response shape as every other country, and adds the annual statements of those filers on GET /companies/{id}/financials.
It returns the company record and its statements. It does not return the filing documents themselves: not the text of a Form 10-K, not the list of a company's filings.
A CIK is ten digits with leading zeros, written CIK-0000320193 in the API. The search joins a CIK to the state registration that carries it, so company_number=CIK-0000320193 returns Apple Inc. as its California registration, CA-806592, with the CIK, the EIN and the LEI in identifiers.
A filer that no state record and no LEI holds is served as a CIK- record under its own number. A name search finds both kinds.
Companies incorporated outside the United States that file with the SEC (annual reports on Form 20-F or 40-F) are served too, as CIK- records with their country of incorporation as the jurisdiction. They are not US state registrations, and they carry no US state number.
GET /companies/{id}/financials returns the annual reports of SEC filers from EDGAR XBRL: Form 10-K, 20-F and 40-F, consolidated, in US GAAP or IFRS, for fiscal years from 2023. Amounts are in the filing currency (mostly USD) plus the euro at the ECB annual average of the fiscal year. Financial statements are on the Scale plan (EUR 99.99/month) and above; Starter, Professional and free trial keys have 10 calls a month on this endpoint. A company that is not an SEC filer has none.
A worked example, Apple Inc. for the fiscal year ended 2025-09-27, as filed:
These are the figures Apple filed, not estimates. Each statement also carries the euro value at the ECB annual average for the fiscal year.
The search returns the record's id; pass it to the other endpoints. To resolve a list, POST /companies/lookup takes up to 100 items in one call, each one counted as one request.
Company records from the business registers of New York, Colorado, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, plus SEC filers (EDGAR) and LEI holders (GLEIF) from every state, Delaware included. One record per state registration, domestic or foreign. New York and Pennsylvania publish active entities only. Updated weekly. No officers; register-change events (dated by the weekly read) and monitoring; no VAT number; sole proprietorships are never served. It is not every US company.
14-day free trial: card required, nothing charged during it, 500 credits in total, then Starter at EUR 9.99/month unless cancelled.
How do I look up a company by CIK from an API?
Call GET /companies/search?country=US&company_number=CIK-0000320193 with an API key. The CIK is ten digits with leading zeros. The result is the record that carries it; for Apple Inc. that is its California registration CA-806592.
Does the API return the text of a 10-K?
No. It returns the company record and the annual statements extracted from the XBRL of 10-K, 20-F and 40-F filings, not the filing documents.
Are foreign companies that file with the SEC included?
Yes. Companies that file Form 20-F or 40-F are served as CIK- records with their country of incorporation as the jurisdiction.
Which plan includes the financial statements?
Scale (EUR 99.99/month) and above. Starter, Professional and free trial keys have 10 calls a month on GET /companies/{id}/financials.
Which fiscal years are available?
From 2023, consolidated, in US GAAP or IFRS, in the filing currency plus the euro at the ECB annual average of the fiscal year.
Where can I try the company search?
The free US company lookup runs the search with a shared key; CIK-0000320193 finds Apple Inc.
