Romania company data API: look up and validate a CUI

A customer types a Romanian CUI, a Romanian VAT number or the first letters of a name; your form fills in the legal name, legal form, status, registered address and CAEN code from the National Trade Register Office (ONRC). One key and one response shape, the same as every other country the API covers.

Company records from the National Trade Register Office (ONRC): legal name, legal form, status (including dissolution, liquidation, insolvency, reorganisation, bankruptcy and deregistration), registered address with the county, CAEN activity codes, the J registration number and EUID, and dates; the VAT number is built from the CUI by rule (RO plus the CUI) and the registration is not confirmed; with register-change events and monitoring, but no officers, no registry-compliance signal, no share capital and no insolvency notices. Natural persons and sole traders (PF, PFA, II, IF, AF) are never served. Updated monthly.

What the Romanian record gives your product

  • Exact match on the CUI: company_number=5022670 with country=RO. An RO prefix is optional, and the check digit is advisory.
  • VAT alias: the Romanian VAT number is RO plus the CUI, searchable with vat= and country=RO. It is built by rule and the registration is not confirmed.
  • Autocomplete by name: a normalised, partial match ranked by a match score, one call per keystroke.
  • The fields a form needs: legal name, legal form, status, registered address with the county, CAEN codes, the J registration number and EUID.

What Romania does not carry

No officers or shareholders, no share capital, no registry-compliance signal and no insolvency notices (insolvency and bankruptcy show in the status). Register-change events and monitoring are available. Natural persons and sole traders are never served.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up a Romanian company by CUI from an API?
Call GET /companies/search?company_number=5022670&country=RO. An RO prefix is optional. The check digit is advisory: a CUI that fails it is still looked up and the answer says so; a value that cannot be a CUI (letters, more than ten digits, or 13 digits, which is a personal number) is a 400 validation error.
Can I look up a Romanian company by VAT number?
Yes. The Romanian VAT number is RO plus the CUI, for example RO5022670. Pass it as vat with country=RO and it resolves to the same company. The record builds the VAT number by rule, so the registration is not confirmed; to check it against VIES, use GET /vat/ followed by the number.
Is the CUI check digit enforced?
No. The check (weights 7, 5, 3, 2, 1, 7, 5, 3, 2) is advisory because a few genuine CUI fail it. Validate in your form for a warning, but do not reject on it.
Does the Romanian record include officers, company events or insolvency notices?
Company events yes; officers and insolvency notices no. Romania is company-level: legal name, legal form, status, registered address with the county, CAEN activity codes, the J registration number and EUID, and dates. There are no officers, no registry-compliance signal and no share capital. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address, dated when the change first appears in the register data, none before the first load in October 2026) and monitoring are available. Insolvency, reorganisation and bankruptcy show in the status.
Which activity codes do Romanian records carry?
CAEN codes in caen_codes, in the revision the company holds (Rev. 2 or Rev. 3). When a company has exactly one CAEN code the NACE code is filled and activity_code_scheme names the version; with several codes the NACE code is null.
Which Romanian entities does it cover?
Companies and the other legal persons of the trade register. Natural persons, authorised natural persons and sole traders (PF, PFA, II, IF, AF) and branches are never served, so a lookup of one returns nothing even though it exists.
How fresh is the data?
Monthly: the register publishes once a month, so a change reaches the record with the next monthly update, and register-change events are dated by that update.
Can I call the API from the browser?
You can, but a key in the browser is public. Proxy the search through your server, as in the sample above. Rate limits are per key.
Is there a way to try it before signing up?
Yes: the free CUI lookup runs the same call with a shared key.
