What is the ONRC (Romania’s National Trade Register Office)?

The Oficiul Național al Registrului Comerțului (ONRC) is the National Trade Register Office of Romania, which keeps the trade register of companies and other registered entities. Every company has a CUI (cod unic de înregistrare, also CIF) of 2 to 10 digits, for example 5022670 for Banca Transilvania. The Romanian VAT number is RO followed by the CUI.

The CUI

2 to 10 digits without leading zeros. The last digit is a check digit with the weights 7, 5, 3, 2, 1, 7, 5, 3, 2, but a few genuine numbers fail it, so a mismatch is a warning, not an error. A 13-digit number is a personal identification number (CNP), never a company.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ONRC?
The Oficiul Național al Registrului Comerțului, the National Trade Register Office of Romania, which keeps the trade register of companies and other registered entities. Its open data is the source of the Romanian company records Prometiam serves.
What is a CUI?
The cod unic de înregistrare, also called CIF: the company’s fiscal identification number, 2 to 10 digits without leading zeros, such as 5022670 for Banca Transilvania. A prefix RO, CUI or CIF is accepted and dropped. The last digit is a check digit (weights 7, 5, 3, 2, 1, 7, 5, 3, 2) but a few genuine numbers fail it, so a mismatch is a warning and not an error. A 13-digit number is a personal identification number (CNP), never a company, and is refused.
Is the Romanian VAT number the CUI?
It is built on it: RO plus the CUI, for example RO5022670. The record gives it by rule, so the format is right but the VAT registration is not confirmed; check it with GET /vat/ followed by the number, which asks VIES. Search it with vat= and country=RO.
What is the registration number (J number)?
The number the trade register itself assigns, such as J1993004155124 (J, the year of registration, the county code and a sequence) or, for older entries, J40/1477/2012. The EUID (ROONRC. and the J number) is the European identifier built on it. Both are in the record beside the CUI.
Which activity classification do Romanian records use?
CAEN, Romania’s version of NACE, in the revision the company holds (Rev. 2 or Rev. 3, and older codes for some). The codes are in caen_codes; the NACE code is given when a company has exactly one CAEN code, and the scheme is named in activity_code_scheme.
Does Prometiam serve Romanian officers, company events or insolvency notices?
Company events yes; officers and insolvency notices no. Romanian records are company-level. There are no officers, no registry-compliance signal and no share capital. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address, dated when the change first appears in the register data, none before the first load in October 2026) and monitoring are available. Romania is not one of the twelve insolvency markets: insolvency, reorganisation and bankruptcy show in the company status.
Which Romanian entities are included?
Companies and the other legal persons of the trade register: SRL, SA, SNC, SCS, SCA, regii autonome (RA), economic interest groupings, cooperatives and the others the register lists. Natural persons, authorised natural persons and sole traders (PF, PFA, II, IF, AF) are never served, and neither are branches, so a search for one returns nothing even though it exists.
How often is the Romanian data updated?
Monthly: the register publishes its open data once a month, so a change appears in the next monthly update.
