What is the e-Business Register (Estonia's Äriregister)?

The Estonian e-Business Register (e-äriregister, usually called the Äriregister) is the register of companies and other legal entities in Estonia, run by the Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK), and it is where the Estonian company records Prometiam serves come from. Every entity in it carries a registry code: eight digits, such as 10060701 for Swedbank AS. The Estonian VAT number (KMKR, EE plus nine digits) is a separate number.

The registry code

The registry code is eight digits, the first being 1, 7, 8 or 9, and the last a check digit (mod 11, with the weights 1 to 7 and, if the result is 10, the weights 3 to 9). The check is enforced: a code that fails it is refused with a 400 validation error.

Legal forms and status

The legal form is the register's abbreviation (OÜ, AS, MTÜ, UÜ, TÜ, SA, FIL). The status is registered (active), in liquidation or in bankruptcy. The activity code is EMTAK, in the 2008 or the 2025 version per company.

What Prometiam serves for Estonia

Company records from the Estonian e-Business Register (RIK): legal name, legal form, status (including liquidation and bankruptcy), registered address, activity code (EMTAK 2008 or 2025, per company) and dates; with register-change events and monitoring, but no officers, no registry-compliance signal and no insolvency notices. Sole traders (FIE, füüsilisest isikust ettevõtja) are never served, and the VAT number (KMKR) is searchable with vat=.

Querying Estonian companies

GET /companies/search?company_number=10060701&country=EE returns the record, and vat=EE100354546 reaches a company through its KMKR number where the register publishes it. The free registry code lookup runs the same call without a key.

Frequently asked questions

What is the e-Business Register?
The Estonian e-Business Register (e-äriregister, the Äriregister), run by the Centre of Registers and Information Systems (RIK). It is the source of the Estonian company records Prometiam serves.
What is an Estonian registry code?
Eight digits, for example 10060701, starting with 1, 7, 8 or 9, with a check digit as the last digit. The check is enforced: a code that fails it is refused with a 400 validation error.
What is the difference between the registry code and the VAT number?
The Estonian VAT number (KMKR) is EE plus nine digits and is a separate number: it is not derived from the registry code. Search by VAT number with vat= and country=EE; whether it is registered and active is a question only VIES answers.
Which activity classification do Estonian records use?
EMTAK, in the 2008 version (NACE Rev. 2) or the 2025 version (NACE Rev. 2.1), per company. activity_code_scheme says which one a company carries.
Does Prometiam serve Estonian directors, company events or insolvency notices?
Company events yes; directors and insolvency notices no. Estonian records are company-level: legal name, legal form, status, registered address, activity code and dates. There are no officers and no registry-compliance signal, and no insolvency notices: liquidation and bankruptcy show only in the company's status. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address; dated when the change first appears in the register data, none before 2026-09-30) and monitoring are available.
Are Estonian sole traders included?
No. Sole traders (FIE, füüsilisest isikust ettevõtja) are never served, so a search for one returns nothing even though the business exists.
