What is Corporations Canada (the federal company register)?

Corporations Canada, part of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, keeps the register of corporations incorporated under federal law: the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA) and the Canada Cooperatives Act. Each has a corporation number of 2 to 8 digits shown as 426160-7 (Shopify Inc.) and, usually, a 9-digit Business Number from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Federal corporations only. Provincial and territorial companies, banks and insurance companies are not included.

The two numbers

The corporation number is 2 to 8 digits with an advisory check digit, shown 426160-7. The Business Number is 9 digits, searched with business_number=, and can be shared by a successor and its predecessor, so a search can return more than one corporation.

Frequently asked questions

What is Corporations Canada?
The federal business registry run by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. It records corporations incorporated under federal law: the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA) and the Canada Cooperatives Act. Its open data is the source of the Canadian company records Prometiam serves.
Does it cover every Canadian company?
No. Federal corporations only. Most Canadian companies are incorporated in a province or territory and sit in a provincial or territorial register, which this API does not cover. Banks and insurance companies are incorporated under their own federal statutes and are not in this register either. Not-for-profit corporations and boards of trade are not served.
What is a Canadian corporation number?
The corporation number Corporations Canada assigns: 2 to 8 digits, the last a check digit, shown as 426160-7 for Shopify Inc. Leading zeros are not used. The check digit is advisory, so a mismatch is a warning and the number is still looked up. Nine digits is a Business Number, not a corporation number, and is searched with business_number=.
What is the Business Number?
The 9-digit number the Canada Revenue Agency assigns to a business. A federal corporation carries it, and business_number= finds corporations by it. It is not unique to one corporation: a successor and its predecessor can share it, so a search can return more than one corporation. A 15-character program account such as 847871746RC0001 names the same Business Number.
Which statuses does a federal corporation have?
Active; active with dissolution pending (struck off for non-compliance, still on the register); intent to dissolve filed; amalgamated; discontinued (continued under another jurisdiction); and dissolved, including by court order or for non-compliance. There is no insolvency, liquidation or bankruptcy status: that sits with the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy and the courts.
Does Prometiam serve officers, company events or insolvency notices for Canada?
No. Canadian records are company-level: no officers, no registry-compliance signal, no activity code, no share capital, no VAT (GST/HST) number and no insolvency notices. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address changes, dated when the change first appears in the register data, none before the first load in October 2026) and company monitoring are available.
Are the French and English names both served?
The record carries the name form the register lists first as company_name. The other name form and any other names are in registry_details (other_names), which also matters for Quebec corporations that register both a French and an English name.
How often is the data updated?
Daily.
