Canadian corporation number lookup

Type a Canadian corporation number, a Business Number or a company name and get the federal corporation from Corporations Canada: legal name, governing statute, status, registered address and province, live. Federal corporations only, not provincial companies.

What a corporation number is

Every federal corporation has a corporation number of 2 to 8 digits shown like 426160-7 for Shopify Inc. The last digit is an advisory check digit. A 9-digit number is a Business Number, which this lookup also accepts and searches with business_number.

What the lookup returns

Company records from Corporations Canada (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada): corporation name, legal form (the governing statute), status (including dissolution pending, intent to dissolve, amalgamation and discontinuance), registered address with the province or territory, the Business Number, other names, and dates; updated daily. Federal corporations only: those incorporated under the Canada Business Corporations Act and the Canada Cooperatives Act, with the repealed Canada Corporations Act Part I corporations kept as history. Provincial and territorial companies, banks, insurance companies, not-for-profit corporations and boards of trade are not included. No officers, no registry-compliance signal, no activity code, no share capital, no VAT (GST/HST) number and no insolvency status. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address changes, dated when the change first appears in the register data, none before the first load in October 2026) and company monitoring are available.

FAQ

A provincial company, a bank, an insurer, a not-for-profit corporation or a board of trade returns nothing even though it exists. A Business Number can match more than one corporation.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a Canadian company return nothing?
The register is the federal one. A company incorporated in a province or territory, a bank, an insurance company, a not-for-profit corporation or a board of trade is not in it, so a lookup returns nothing even though the company exists.
Why is my corporation number flagged?
The check digit is advisory. A number that fails it is shown with a warning and is still looked up, because the rule was inferred from the register and not documented.
Why does a Business Number return several corporations?
A Business Number is not unique to one corporation: a successor and its predecessors can share it. Check the status of each.
Can I do this in code?
Yes: GET /companies/search?company_number=426160-7&country=CA with an API key returns the same record as JSON.
