Type a Finnish Y-tunnus (business ID) and get the company from the Finnish Trade Register: legal name, legal form, status, registered address and activity code, live. The modulus-11 check digit is verified in your browser first.
Every Finnish business and organisation gets a Y-tunnus, the business ID, written as seven digits, a hyphen and a check digit: 0112038-9 is Nokia Oyj. The last digit is a modulus-11 check over the first seven with the weights 7, 9, 10, 5, 8, 4 and 2, which is why a mistyped number is caught before the lookup. A remainder of 1 has no check digit, so a number that would need one is never issued.
The same digits are the company’s EU VAT number once it is VAT-registered: FI followed by the eight digits, without the hyphen (FI01120389). Some older numbers appear with only six digits before the hyphen; the missing leading zero is restored, so 112038-9 reads as 0112038-9.

Is the Y-tunnus the same as the VAT number?
It is the basis of it: the Finnish VAT number is FI plus the eight digits of the Y-tunnus, without the hyphen. The lookup takes either form.
Why does a valid number return nothing?
Sole traders are not part of the Finnish records, a business that has left the register may no longer be served, and a new registration can take a few days to appear. Try the name search.
