In New York the business register is kept by the Department of State (NY DOS), and searches for it are often typed as "NY DOS" or "New York department of state business search". The data behind this lookup covers the active corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships on that register, both domestic (formed in New York) and foreign (formed in another state or country and authorised to do business in New York).
The dataset lists active entities only. A company that has been dissolved is no longer in it, so it is not found here, and its absence is not a statement that it never existed. A company whose New York record ended and that still holds an LEI or files with the SEC can still appear through those sources.
A New York company number is NY- and the Department of State ID: NY-4424185 is BUTCHY'S WINE & SPIRITS, INC., a domestic business corporation in Westchester County, filed on 2013-06-27. The DOS ID has no check digit, so only its shape is verified. A name works as well: type it and pick the match.
