German LEI lookup

Type a German LEI or a company name and get the company from the German data of the Prometiam API: legal name, legal form, status and city, live. The records are LEI-registered entities (GLEIF) and companies listed in the energy market register; this is not an extract of the German commercial register (Handelsregister).

The same lookup with curl
curl "https://api.prometiam.com/functions/v1/risk-api/companies/search?company_number=529900D6BF99LW9R2E68&country=DE" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer rk_live_your_api_key"

What a German LEI is

For most German records the company number is the LEI (Legal Entity Identifier, ISO 17442): 20 characters, 18 letters or digits and two check digits, for example 529900D6BF99LW9R2E68 for SAP SE. The check digits follow ISO 7064 MOD 97-10: each letter becomes a number from 10 to 35 (A = 10 to Z = 35), the whole string is read as one integer, and a valid LEI leaves a remainder of 1 when divided by 97. The LEI carries no country code, so it does not say where a company sits. The check is enforced.

Only companies that hold an LEI are in the LEI layer: a German company has one only if it applied for one. The LEI's own renewal status (registry_details.lei_status) is never the company's status. registry_details also carries the register court, register type and register number (for example Amtsgericht München, HRB) where the source states them; they are not read from the commercial register.

What the lookup returns

The lookup sends the LEI or the name to the Prometiam API and returns the name, legal form, status and city of the record. Two sources, one record per company, neither an extract of the German commercial register (Handelsregister) and not all German companies: LEI-registered entities from the GLEIF golden copy, with register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address; none before the first load in October 2026) and monitoring, and a partial layer from the Marktstammdatenregister of the Bundesnetzagentur (energy-market actors that state a commercial-register entry no LEI record holds; the entry is declared by the operators and not checked against the commercial register, and these records have no status, no founding date and no register-change events, and are monitored for a sanctions match only). Company records only: no officers, shareholders or beneficial owners, no share capital, no activity code, no registry-compliance signal, no financial statements and no VAT number. GmbH (including gGmbH), UG (haftungsbeschränkt), AG, KGaA, SE, OHG, KG (including GmbH & Co. KG), eG and PartG only; sole traders (e.K.) and other natural persons, GbR, associations (e.V.), foundations, public-law bodies, funds and branches are never served. Updated daily. German corporate insolvency notices are a separate dataset and are not linked to these records.

The full record is one call away. The 14-day trial needs a card, and nothing is charged for 14 days. Subscribing keeps the same key working.

FAQ

Is this the German commercial register?
No. It is not an extract of the Handelsregister: the records are LEI-registered entities from GLEIF (CC0) and a partial layer from the Marktstammdatenregister. An extract comes from the common register portal of the German states (handelsregister.de).

Does every German company have an LEI?
No. Only companies that applied for one, usually because they or their business partners need it, have one. A company without an LEI is not in the LEI layer, and an empty result does not prove that a company does not exist.

Is the status of the LEI the status of the company?
No. The status of the LEI (issued, lapsed) is in registry_details.lei_status. A lapsed LEI does not mean that the company has ceased.

Can I do this in code?
Yes: GET /companies/search?country=DE&lei=529900D6BF99LW9R2E68 with an API key returns the same record as JSON.
