How to read the figures

  • Levels are not comparable between countries: each market counts what its own source publishes, under its own rule. Compare a market with itself over time.
  • The “Change on a year earlier” column compares a month with the same month a year earlier, where both are covered.
  • This page gives the counts and does not explain the changes: it contains no forecast and no cause.

What is counted

  • Source. Notices of the Gazette: creditors’ voluntary liquidations, winding-up orders (compulsory liquidation) and administrations.
  • Unit. One proceeding per company and type, counted in the month of its first notice.
  • Period. The Gazette series starts in April 2025 and April is not published, so the first covered month is May 2025.

What is not counted

  • Members’ voluntary (solvent) liquidations.
  • Individuals and sole traders: corporate debtors only.
  • Later notices of a proceeding that is already counted.
  • The official company insolvency statistics, which count by their own rules and dates.

Official statistics

Official company insolvency statistics are published by the UK authorities and count by their own rules. The figures here are Gazette notices counted by month of the first notice. They are not an official statistic and can differ from the official figures, which count by other rules and dates.

The notices behind the counts

The API gives access to the notices themselves. GET /insolvency/search?country=GB returns the notices, linked to the company record (GET /companies/{id}?include=insolvency), and POST /insolvency/check checks up to 100 counterparties in one call. Insolvency notices are corporate only, in sixteen markets. A search or a checked item costs 2 credits; the example lists the notices of the latest month.

Frequently asked questions

How many UK company insolvencies were there in September 2026?
The tracker counts 2,004 new corporate insolvency proceedings in September 2026 (data as at 17 October 2026): creditors’ voluntary liquidations, winding-up orders and administrations, +7% on September 2025.
Does this include members’ voluntary liquidations?
No. Members’ voluntary (solvent) liquidations are not insolvency proceedings and are not counted.
Why does the series start in May 2025?
The Gazette series starts in April 2025 and April is not published. A month is shown only when its data is complete, so earlier months are not covered rather than shown understated.
Are these the official insolvency statistics?
No. They are Gazette notices counted by month of the first notice, per company and type. Official statistics count by their own rules and dates, so the two series can differ.
Can I get the notices themselves?
Yes, through the API: the notice search returns the notices, linked to the company record, for corporate debtors only. See the section “The notices behind the counts”.
