Type an ABN, an ACN or a company name. The number is checked in your browser first (the ABN check digit, weighted sum divisible by 89), then the company is read from ASIC and the Australian Business Register.
An ABN is 11 digits. The test: subtract 1 from the first digit, multiply the digits by 10, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19, add the products, and the total must divide by 89. A pass says the number is well-formed. It does not say the business exists, is current or is registered for GST, which is why the tool then looks for a company that holds the ABN.
The registered company behind the ABN: its name, type (proprietary, public or foreign company), status, the state and the postcode of the registered office, and the GST number where the ABN is active and registered for GST. The Australian record is the registered company: proprietary, public and foreign companies with an ACN or an ARBN, joined to the Australian Business Register (ABR) by that number. It gives the state and the postcode of the registered office, not a street address. Associations, cooperatives, other registered bodies, trusts, partnerships, individuals and sole traders are never served, and it does not replace ABN Lookup for the ABN and GST history of a business.
The same call is GET /companies/search?country=AU&abn=49004028077 with an API key; see the ABN Lookup API guide for batch lookup and monitoring.
