The RUT is the tax number the Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII) gives a Chilean legal entity, and there is no separate VAT number. The register serves only the companies registered under the simplified regime of Ley 20.659 ("Empresa en un Día") since 2013, so a valid RUT of an older company, or of one formed before a notary, finds nothing. Dots, the word RUT and a lower-case k are accepted. A RUT below 50,000,000 belongs to a natural person and is refused.

A valid shape and check digit prove that a number is well-formed, not that a company holds it. Only a lookup in the register answers that.
