A 13-digit number is a personal number (JMBG) and is refused. The tax number (PIB) is a separate number that the register open data does not carry and that cannot be derived from the matični broj. Companies only (d.o.o., a.d., o.d., k.d.); entrepreneurs, cooperatives, public enterprises and associations are never served.

A valid shape and check digit prove that a number is well-formed, not that a company holds it. Only a lookup in the register answers that.
