Matični broj lookup
Type a Serbian matični broj or a company name and get the company from the Register of Business Entities of the Business Registers Agency (APR): legal name, legal form, status, municipality and activity code, live. The number and its check digit are verified in your browser first.
The same lookup with curl
curl "https://api.prometiam.com/functions/v1/risk-api/companies/search?company_number=17204106&country=RS" \ -H "Authorization: Bearer rk_live_your_api_key"
What a matični broj is
Every company in the Serbian Register of Business Entities has a matični broj (MB) of 8 digits, a leading zero being part of the number, for example 17204106. The last digit is a check digit: the first seven digits are weighted 9, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, the sum is taken modulo 11 and a remainder of 10 reads as 0. For 17204106 the sum is 83, 83 modulo 11 is 6 and the eighth digit is 6. The rule is fitted to the register's open data rather than to a published standard, and it is enforced: a number that fails it is refused.
A shorter number is read with its leading zeros restored (8831076 is 08831076). A 13-digit number is a personal number (JMBG), not a company, and is refused. The record carries no tax (PIB) number, and a VAT search for Serbia is refused.
What the lookup returns
The lookup sends the number to the Prometiam API and returns the name, legal form, status, municipality and activity code of the record. Company records from the Register of Business Entities kept by the Business Registers Agency of the Republic of Serbia (APR), read from its Open Data API and updated monthly (a snapshot cut at month-end): legal name, legal form, status (active, in liquidation, in forced liquidation, in bankruptcy or deregistered), the municipality as the city, the KD 2010 activity code and dates, with register-change events (name, status, legal form and address, which is the municipality; none before Serbia's launch in October 2026, the first with the next monthly snapshot) and company monitoring. No street address, no share capital, no officers, no registry-compliance signal, no VAT (PIB) number, no financial statements and no insolvency notices. Companies only (d.o.o., a.d., o.d., k.d.): entrepreneurs, cooperatives, public enterprises, branches and representative offices of foreign companies, associations and foundations are never served.
The full record is one call away. The 14-day trial needs a card, and nothing is charged for 14 days. Subscribing keeps the same key working.
FAQ
Is the matični broj the same as the PIB?
No. The PIB is the tax number and is a separate number. The answer carries no PIB, and a VAT search for Serbia is refused.
Why is my number refused?
The check digit is enforced. A number that fails it is refused, and so is a 13-digit number, which is a JMBG. A shorter number is read with its leading zeros restored.
Why does a valid matični broj return nothing?
Only companies of the Register of Business Entities are served. An entrepreneur, a cooperative, a public enterprise, a branch or representative office of a foreign company, an association or a foundation returns nothing even though it exists. The register lists live entities only, so a company that leaves it shows as deregistered once it is missing from a monthly snapshot. Try the name search, which takes Latin or Cyrillic letters.
Can I do this in code?
Yes: GET /companies/search?company_number=17204106&country=RS with an API key returns the same record as JSON.
