KVK number lookup
Type a Dutch KVK number or a company name and get the entity from the Prometiam API: legal name, legal form, status and city, live. The records are Dutch legal entities that hold an LEI, from the GLEIF golden copy; this is not an extract of the Dutch commercial register (Handelsregister, KVK). What a KVK number is
The KVK number is the registration number of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce: exactly 8 digits, a leading zero being part of the number (04040577). No check digit is published, so the browser check looks at the shape only: 8 digits, not all zeros. A 7-digit number is not padded and a 9-digit number is refused (an RSIN has 9 digits). The Dutch VAT number (NL, nine digits, B and two digits) is a separate number and cannot be derived from the KVK number.
Only Dutch legal entities that hold an LEI, and whose KVK number GLEIF records, are in the data. The LEI is a second identifier, searchable with lei=.
What the lookup returns
The lookup sends the number to the Prometiam API and returns the name, legal form, status and city of the record. Dutch legal entities with an LEI and a KVK number, from the GLEIF golden copy (CC0 1.0), updated daily: BV, NV, SE (Europese NV), cooperatives, SCE, OWM, CV and VOF. Sole proprietorships (eenmanszaak) and every natural person, maatschappen and rederijen, foundations (stichting), associations, churches, public-law bodies, funds, branches, records without a legal form and any form nobody has classified are never served. Status is active, deregistered or merged; the LEI's own renewal status is registry_details.lei_status, never the company status, and GLEIF gives no dissolution date. The founding date is GLEIF's entity creation date and can be later than the start of the company. Register-change events (name, status, legal form and registered address; none before 30 October 2026) and monitoring. No officers, share capital, activity code, VAT number, contacts or financial statements. Dutch insolvency notices link by KVK number, but only entities that hold an LEI are served, so most notices link to no company record.

FAQ
Is this the Dutch commercial register?
No. The data comes from the GLEIF golden copy, and only Dutch legal entities with an LEI and a KVK number recorded by GLEIF are in it. An extract of the commercial register comes from the Chamber of Commerce.
Why does my company not appear?
It has no LEI, GLEIF does not record its KVK number, or it is a legal form that is never served, such as a sole proprietorship, an association or a foundation. Try the name search.
Does a KVK number have a check digit?
No check digit is published, so the lookup checks the shape only: 8 digits, not all zeros.
Can I do this in code?
Yes: GET /companies/search?company_number=17085815&country=NL with an API key returns the same record as JSON.
